Beware the Bear!

Monarch, the last known California grizzly bear to be held in captivity, was captured in 1889.  In 1911, the year of Monarch’s death, the “Bear Flag” was adopted as the official state flag of California. Monarch remains mounted and preserved at the Golden State Park Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.

In 2001, the design of California’s Flag was ranked 13th out of 72 U.S. and Canadian flags through a survey among members of NAVA, the North American Vexillological Association (an organization dedicated to the appreciation and study of flags).
