The Bennington

"The Spirit of '76"

Look Closely...

13 stars and 13 stripes? Check and Check. But unlike many other American flags, the Bennington Flag has more white stripes than red, and has 7-pointed stars instead of the traditional 5-pointed variety. And of course, it has that big 'ol "76" in the canton.

Named for the Battle of Bennington in New York during the summer of 1777, this flag's creator and date of introduction are lost to history. Many theorize a debut in the 1800's, perhaps to bolster patriotism during the War of 1812, or possibly to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence (1826), or the country's centennial in 1876.
